There are three main ways to address Trump's Military Parade. The first is direct, in-person protests, allowing participants to vocally and visibly express dissent and solidarity against the values associated with the president. This includes chants, signs, and organized marches to draw attention and encourage social justice and equality. The second strategy is boycotting the parade, refusing to give it attention, thereby diminishing its significance and impact. Lastly, veterans could stage a re-enactment of the Tiananmen Square protests, highlighting the importance of resisting oppressive regimes and defending democratic values.
Secretary of Defense Hegseth has ordered the renaming of naval vessels named after civil rights leaders, sparking outrage. This includes the USNS Harvey Milk, named after the LGBTQ+ rights activist. The Legal Defense Fund, founded by the NAACP in 1940 and became a separate organization in 1957, opposes this move, viewing it as an attempt to erase the legacies of those who fought for justice and equality. The renaming of ships within the John Lewis Class, honoring figures like Thurgood Marshall, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Harriet Tubman, Medgar Evers, and Harvey Milk, is seen as an act of cruelty driven by bigotry.
There is also concern about the future of the 988 suicide prevention phone system, crucial for veterans and LGBTQ+ Americans, which faces potential defunding by October 1st, 2025. This threatens mental health support for vulnerable populations, highlighting a broader pattern of neglect towards marginalized communities. The potential loss of this service underscores the urgent need for advocacy to protect vital resources that save lives and offer hope during crises.
